ABOUT THE COURSE:

A well-running Geographic Information System (GIS) improves workflow and access to information. How can local governments make a successful GIS a reality with a limited budget and competing priorities?

Managers and GIS professionals will learn how to plan for and prioritize GIS within and across their agencies. Using common language and practical examples, this course breaks GIS down into the fundamental parts crucial to its success. Participants will learn the basic steps used to identify and implement the most cost-effective uses of GIS within their organizations.

Participants will learn:

• the fundamental building blocks of a successful GIS program.
• how to identify the best uses of GIS within their organization.
• about the hidden costs and common pitfalls associated with GIS initiatives.
• how to communicate the full scope of a GIS project or GIS initiative.
• the steps common to most GIS planning methodologies.
• about current trends in the industry affecting local governments.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Brian Parr has more than 13 years experience working in the GIS industry. He’s worked as the GIS coordinator for the city of Manhattan, Kan., a project manager for Esri’s Educational Services and the GIS manager for the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC).

Parr is an Esri-certified desktop associate with experience in the areas of GIS management, spatial analysis, system implementation and GIS education. He currently works as a private contractor.
